A Multidisciplinary Life.

For the past six years, I’ve been at this place called Stanford. Today I was on campus, officially as student, for the last time… ever. I leave for Boston on Sunday, a one-way ticket to that other coast to set up my life, start to transition, and prepare for the start of my internship.

Let me recap my day:
-Wake up, work from home in San Francisco, plug away on the research from Uganda, mostly organizing video files.
-Take CalTrain to campus in Palo Alto.
-Meet with my research advisor to talk about analysis of the project in Uganda (sport for youth with disabilities and changes in quality of life).
-Meet with a reporter from the Stanford Report to talk about a story that will print in a few weeks.
-Meet with a good friend (who also happens to make documentaries) regarding using the video clips from Uganda for a short film.
-Go to dinner/fundraising event for the Save Darfur Coalition at a fancy, beautiful home in Portola Valley.

Can you say…. Life’s not bad? Oh my gosh, it couldn’t get any better. Today I studied a bit of medicine, thought about health within the broader context of disability rights for youth, talked a bit about a multimedia presentation, and topped it off with some advocacy.

Today, being my last day on campus, was such an amazing example of what this institution has taught me to be, that is, a multidisciplinary thinker, living a multidisciplinary life. While tooling around campus from meeting to meeting and traversing different buildings and departments, I was able to reflect on how much I have grown as a person over those six years, and how much I’ve inevitably been shaped by my environment. We all are. It just.... happens. Today, I'm thrilled to recognize that I’ve been shaped in this way – to think broadly about how we might solve some of the worlds biggest challenges -collaboratively.

Now, preparing to move to the East Coast, I can only hope to retain as much as of my Stanford vibe as is possible. Look out Boston, granola crunchy touchy feely open minded ambitious but sometimes flighty girl is coming to town.

Cheri,
You have been an inspiration to more people than you realize (Susan and I share your story with friends). Keep up the good work. Hopefully we will see you at the family re-union in 2010 ( I enjoyed your blog! ).

Good luck in your new environment in Boston!!!

By the way did you know you are in Wikipedia?
